A Short Guide to Choosing Your Scythe
For persons new to using a scythe wading through the various choices can be daunting. This guide will help you through the process of selecting a scythe that is right for you and the work you plan to do.
The two most important decisions in choosing a scythe are the snath and the blade. The following outline with pertinent Scythe Supply links will help you decide which snath and blade are best suited for you and your work. If you have any questions please contact us.
Snath
Type, whether straight or bent, depends on height. If you are 65” tall or under select a straight snath. If you are taller than 65” choose a bent snath. For more information see our Snath Selection Guidelines.
Experienced mowers may know they prefer one snath type over the other regardless of height criteria listed above.
Measurements must be taken accurately:
- Height wearing the shoes you’ll mow in.
- Hip to Ground
- Cubit
Done! It’s that easy.
Blade
There are three blade types: Grass, Ditch, and Bush.

Outfit
The outfit is a kit that includes all the items you need to use and maintain your scythe.
